What type of gynecomastia surgery incisions are there?
Gynecomastia surgery incisions vary by patient. There are three common types of incisions. Your aesthetic plastic surgeon will select a technique based on your breast size and shape, areola size and position, skin elasticity and your desired results.
Liposuction
Your surgeon will place small liposuction incisions in hard to see areas on and around the chest.

Excision
If surgical excision is required, your surgeon will make an incision under the areola. If you need to reduce the size of your areola, the surgeon will likely make an incision all the way around the areola.

Combination of Liposuction and Excision
Your surgeon will place small liposuction incisions in hard to see areas on and around the chest to conduct the liposuction and make an incision around the areola to complete the excision.

Will I have any scars after my gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia surgery scars vary, depending on the amount of breast tissue you have and the elasticity of your skin.
- If you have small breasts that are only fat, then your scars will be tiny (just large enough to admit a liposuction cannula).
- If you have firm breast tissue, you will likely have a scar under the areola.
- If your areolas are large and need a reduction, your scar will go all the way around the areola.
- If you have large female-like breasts, then the scars may extend across each side of your chest, but your surgeon will attempt to hide them in a crease.
Although incision lines are permanent, in most cases they will fade and significantly improve over time. Aesthetic plastic surgeons make every effort to place incisions in hidden areas and minimize them, to achieve the desired results with the shortest possible scar. Special tissue handling and suture techniques further minimize scars.
Your incision healing will depend on the surgical technique, the steps you take to prevent infection (nutrition, not smoking, hydrating), and any underlying medical conditions or genetic tendencies.
