What are the risks associated with a butt lift?
You should discuss the risks and potential complications with your aesthetic plastic surgeon during your consultation and after your procedure to ensure you are on the right track to recovery.
All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Some of the potential complications of all surgeries are:
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Hematoma or seroma (an accumulation of blood or fluid under the skin that may require removal)
- Infection and bleeding
- Changes in sensation
- Scarring
- Allergic reactions
- Damage to underlying structures
- Unsatisfactory results that may necessitate additional procedures
Other risks specific to Brazilian butt lifts are:
- Fat absorption, which could be as much as 40 percent, may produce asymmetry. A BBL procedure is more difficult to predict and may require additional fat grafting sessions over time to achieve your desired result.
- Fat embolism is a complication in which fat is injected into a blood vessel and travels (embolizes) to the heart or lungs. Most board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons have never had a patient with this complication, but this can be a fatal event if it occurs. Given the severity of this complication, The Aesthetic Society created a task force to extensively study fat embolism and associated risk factors. The task force identified and shared methods for surgeons to follow to reduce the risk of this complication. These methods include injecting fat above the muscle (rather than into or below it), using large blunt injection instruments, and other specific surgical techniques.
Other risks specific to butt implants are:
- Butt implant slippage, causing asymmetry
You can help minimize butt surgery risks by following your board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeon’s advice and instructions before and after your surgery.
