Gall Bladder Removal After Tummy Tuck
I had tummy tuck 2 years ago, now I have recurrent abdominal pain due to gall stones and I need a cholecystectomy. Is it possible to be done by laparoscopy through the umbilicus or do I have to have it done by traditional open long scar? What can I expect in the way of complications? Thank you very much.
It is possible, but make sure the surgeon is an experienced surgeon and that he/she is prepared to convert to open surgery if entry cannot be made.
It can be done in a similar way to people who had no tummy tuck. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard way of removing the gall bladder and that should apply to you.
It should be possible depending on the technique your plastic surgeon used. We often try to be available to help our general surgery colleagues when one of our patients needs abdominal surgery to help with scar placement and closure. Depending on the technique of muscle tightening used during your tummy tuck, if any mesh was used, what type and the location of sutures, they may be able to access your abdomen laparoscopically (perhaps with the Hasson technique as opposed to a Veress needle) or a separate incision may be required. Ideally, there would be communication between your plastic surgeon and general surgeon to help determine how best to proceed.
