Liposuction and bariatric surgery?
What is the difference between liposuction and bariatric surgery? I'm not sure if I understand.
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing localized fatty deposits to improve a person's body contour so clothes look and fit better. It is not a weight loss procedure. The best candidates for liposuction are close to normal weight with small fatty deposits that tend to be resistant to diet and exercise. Bariatric surgery involves surgery on the internal organs in order to reduce a person's food intake so that a person can lose weight. It is performed on massively overweight individuals who have been unsuccessful losing weight with diet and exercise. The goal is to reduce a person's appetite and caloric intake so that they are able to lose large amounts of weight to increase their chances of living a longer life with less medical problems.
Thank you for your question. Liposuction is a body contour procedure to treat isolated areas of fat deposition. Bariatric surgery is a procedure that reduces or re-routes portions of the gastrointestinal tract to reduce the absorption of food (calories). The is a medical procedure to treat morbid obesity. Liposuction is a cosmetic contouring procedure and not a weight loss strategy. I hope this helps.
Bariatric surgery are different procedures done in the digestive system (stomach, intestines) to reduce the absorption of the nutrients, so the patient can lose weight. Liposuction is a procedure to improve the body contour by reducing the fat deposits under the skin in some areas of the body, but liposuction does not make the patient to lose weight.
