Procedure(s)
Although a scar can never be completely removed there are many ways in which it can be improved. often scars can be improved through non-surgical methods that would include combinations of dermabrasion, "needling", and the application of topical agents to soften the scar tissue and improve its color. If a surgical revision is necessary, the scar is removed and the adjacent uninjured skin is closed in a fashion to minimize scar formation and/or relieve tension across the scar. After initial healing, topical agents (silicone scar treatment is popular and effective) can be applied to further lessen the scar formation and offer the best quality scar. Of utmost importance is to protect healing tissues and young scars (less than 1 year old) from UV radiation. UV radiation increases scar formation, making the scars thicker, redder and more noticeable.
