What is your opinion on maintaining viability of the Areola and Nipple after a breast reduction?

Yes, nipple sensation can normally be very important to women. Many men & surgeons are not aware of this issue. Preservation of nipple viability/sensation is usually a priority for plastic surgeons who perform Breast Reduction surgery. Consider discussing your concerns with your surgeon before your surgery.

With breast reduction surgery, the nipple and areola are moved to a new location and to move to that location, they are left attached to their blood supply which keeps the nipple alive. In extreme cases, the nipple and areola may be removed and placed as a graft. This is done when the surgeon feels the risk of the nipple dying and being lost is great. Grafting is a way or preserving the appearance, but the sensation is lost. When the nipple is left attached, the sensitive is generally preserved but there is also a small risk of losing that sensation.
