Conventional lipo vs Söring Ultrasound lipo. Which to choose?
I have gone to 2 consultations; both doctors part of ASAPS. Both have told me I have ideal skin (elasticity), and health (36, non-smoker, no major illness or allergies). One doctor operates using conventional liposuction, the other using Söring Ultrasound device. I am having difficulty choosing. I am not very overweight; just have some stubborn fat in usual areas (abdomen, thighs, arms). I appreciate some more insight.
While some surgeons utilize ultrasonic liposuction and others use laser-lipo or water-jet llpo, most of the promises of improved results over standard liposuction, less bruising, faster recovery, skin tightening are purely unsubstantiated marketing claims. Most of the scientific studies show no appreciable improvement over standard liposuction. In fact, ultrasonic and laser lipo may produce other complications, including burns and greater scarring.
What is important: individualization, narrow instrument to remove the fat (cannula), wetting solution (tumescence), proper safety precautions, experience and training of individual at the end of the instrument, how much you leave, not just what you take, an appropriate surgical facility that is accredited by a national organization, like AAAASF – not just an office treatment room that may never be examined for standards, and a fully trained anesthesia provider . No matter which technology is used, you need to be realistic about your outcome. It is not a replacement for diet and exercise nor does it replace other surgical procedures for loose sagging skin.
I would suggest your plastic surgeon be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person.

Either of these techniques, conventional liposuction or ultrasonic liposuction will give good results in a good Plastic Surgeon's hands. Many years ago the was a paper where the same talented Plastic Surgeon preformed standard liposuction on one side of the patient and ultrasonic liposuction on the other. After a good number of patients it was determined that no difference was found. I would suggest to you that the most important decision is not the standard or ultra sonic but the talent of the surgeon.
