Should I replace saline implants?
I have saline implants under the muscle. No problems. It's been 14.5 years. Should I consider replacing them? Is it better to replace before a rupture?
Saline implants are good for as long as they are not a problem. It seems that there is this Urban ledgen that they need to be replaced every 10 years but there is no reason for them to be replaced as long as you are happy with them.
If your implants were placed in the U.S.then they most likely have a lifetime warranty for rupture, and it would be a harmless event. There is no reason to replace them just because they are 14 yers old.
It is nice to hear that you have had your implants for 14 years and no issues. Your situation is very simple; if you are having no issues then there is not need to go through the expense and down-time to replace them. This is the advantage of having normal saline implants. If the implants rupture you will know. Normal saline implants can also have a partial leak as well which is a valve issue. This is more difficult to tell.
There is a myth that implants will last only 10 years. There is no valid scientific data to support that statement. You should realize that no one can guarantee the life cycle of an implant, that it may not last forever and it may not be a one-time surgery. Implants do not need to be replaced unless a problem occurs. There is no expiration date on breast implants. I have personally seen some patients who have had implants in for over thirty years and the implants are still intact. The newer generation of current implants has been improved. The implant manufacturers do have limited warranties on the implants.
