Abdominoplasty after lumbar fusion
Asked 2020-06-11
I recently read that a tummy tuck can help with chronic low back pain, and I wanted to see if this is true? I have a total of 4 fused lumbar, with posterior incision. I am a 40 year old multiple, last baby was 9 pounds (and all vaginal deliveries). Still having significant back pain, and ready to feel better! Also, I know this is usually considered cosmetic, but can it ever be covered if medically necessary?

It won't be considered medically necessary, but it can help by strengthening your core. Repairing the diastasis will allow all of your core muscles to have better strength and tone. I think it is important that you don't put too much stress on the lower back. I will sometimes make the incision just a little higher to avoid needing to have a lot of flexion to take the tension off of the closure.
