Chin Implant with Neck Liposuction
I am scheduled for a chin implant (under-chin, silicone) with neck liposuction in December. I have some concerns about nerve damage. Is nerve damage to my lips, chin, and neck a strong possibility with either the implant or the liposuction? Also, I have questions about infection. Is that also a great possibility as well?
Hi. A board certified, experienced Plastic Surgeon will be just as concerned about this and will select an appropriately sized and shaped implant to avoid this. At the time of surgery, the potential for impingement on nerve branches will be minimized by careful placement. Liposuction will also be completed with the same meticulous attention. A sterile operating room, use of antibiotics (intravenous or by mouth, rinsing/ irrigation of the wound, and bathing the implant prior to placement) are all standard procedures to minimize the risks of infection. Adherence to postoperative recommendations on positioning, incision care, etc. is your commitment and part to ensuring the least adverse outcome. Best wishes, Dr. Doolabh
Some individuals have ‘sagging’ necks primarily due to fat accumulation below the jawbone (mandible). In some cases, liposuction alone can significantly improve the neck appearance. Liposuction is also frequently combined with surgical neck rejuvenation, and in selected cases some direct excision of fat (through a hidden incision below the chin) is performed. The reduction of fat in the area below the jawline and in the anterior neck almost always makes the neck appear longer, and makes the patient’s profile appear more elegant or refined
In some cases, a chin implant can also be included to provide a natural looking proportion to the profile.
Be sure your plastic surgeon is a member of ASAPS and the procedure will be performed in an accredited facility. Look at many, many before and after images s evidence of results.
Thank you for asking. Chin implants and neck liposuction are a safe combination for most people. Talk with your plastic surgeon about your specific issues. There are several nerves nearby in these areas but surgeons are aware of these to minimize any problems. If a minor problem does occur, it is usually temporary and reversible. Infection is uncommon and precautions are taken to address this too. Best wishes!
