If I'm 15 should I get a breast reduction?
I'm 5,3" and I weigh about 125 pounds. I'm a pretty thin/athletic girl but my breast size is around a 32DDD to a 32F depending on where I get my bra. From 2016-2017 my breast size went from a 32C to the size I am currently, but my breast size and weight haven't changed in about a year. I'm not able to perform in sports how I used to and I can't stand the way they look anymore. Shopping for clothes and bras is a nightmare, and the constant weight of them gives me shoulder and back pain. I have stretch marks on them from the rapid growth and they don't look as nearly as nice as they used to, which also has brought some confidence issues. I've been wanting to get this procedure done for the past year, but I'm just wondering if this is a wise decision for me considering how young I am.
In general it is better to wait a few more years for near complete breast development however in individual cases were breast size is substantially interfering in usual lifestyle activities it is reasonable to proceed at a younger age. Getting a breast reduction at 15 is not unreasonable but may lead to needing a second reduction as you get older. Be sure to seek out an experienced board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options.
Having a reduction as a teen is a very personal decision as you will have to weigh the benefits of the procedure against the risks and not being able to breast feed or losing sensation are real risks. In addition, you could still experience breast development and get larger again and must accept the scarring that is guaranteed. The benefits are many, including being able to participate in sports as you have enjoyed and if your breasts are truly making your life miserable, then a reduction can work for you.
Thank you for this question - there are several things to consider as a teenager with large breasts. Are they affecting your ability to exercise or carry out your usual daily activities? If so you may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery. In general, it is best to wait until women have reached full breast maturity in their early twenties before undertaking a reduction surgery. There are instances, however, where the symptoms from large breasts outweigh the age considerations. The physical and emotional maturity of the patient, the ability to take time off from school to recover from surgery, and the risk of further breast enlargement after surgery are all things to take into account. I would recommend a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area who can meet with you and and discuss the options and timing. It is very important to remember that if you have a breast reduction before your breasts are done growing that a second surgery may be required for a second reduction. Reduction surgery can have implications on breastfeeding so it is critical to partner with an experienced surgeon in your area to develop a plan that is individualized to your specific needs.
