Ossified SI joints
Asked 2016-12-23
I've had Ankylosing Spondylitis for about 30 years and I'm advanced/severe. I am already apple shaped, but I've recently lost about 170 pounds. My bottom is nothing but skin and bone. Sitting has become extremely painful. I've asked my rheumatologist about transferring fat to protect the SI joints. He thought it sounded great, but he knows less than nothing about it. Is this feasible? Is there a chance insurance may pay? Sitting on anything hurts, eventually. Hard surfaces hurt immediately. Thanks for any info!

Procedure(s)
Plastic surgeons routinely transfer fat. The fat itself may provide padding and contains stem cells that may aid in regenerating the joint. You should try to find a board certified plastic surgeon that is willing to work with a rheumatologist or spine surgeon to perform the procedure.
