The Aesthetic Foundation Presidential Update Vol 3

Patricia McGuire, MD

Do you have an idea for a study but don’t where to start or how to finance it? The Aesthetic Foundation has awarded over $3 Million dollars to aesthetic surgery research since it was founded in 1993. There have been over 80 published papers in Aesthetic Surgery Journal (the highest impact factor journal in plastic surgery) from Foundation-funded studies, including recent papers on gluteal fat grafting and managing patients with systemic symptoms they attribute to their breast implants. The Star Study, which is funded by a Foundation grant, will prospectively follow patients after breast augmentation for the development of systemic symptoms. This study will utilize Aesthetic One, the platform that also powers ARISE, the American Registry for Implant Surveillance and Evaluation.

The application process is straightforward and is open to Aesthetic Society Active and Associate members and other researchers sponsored by an Aesthetic Society member. All details and the link to apply can be found here:

The demand for aesthetic surgery and procedures continues to grow. With that growth comes scrutiny and concerns about safety and effectiveness. The best way to address these challenges and concerns is through scientific research, which can help to answer questions about risk, long-term results, and patient safety.

You can support this important research by becoming a Foundation member or renewing your membership, which is easy to do when you renew your Aesthetic Society membership each fall.

DONATION ACCESS

Established in 2025, The Foundation now has distinct Donor Recognition Levels to thank and honor those who make a difference each year:

- Members keep The Foundation running and moving forward year after year. If all Society members also paid Foundation membership dues, a strong statement would be made on the dedication of members to improvements in patient safety and outcomes.

- Beyond Club Donors go beyond annual dues with donations of $200 or more.

- Champion’s League Donors choose The Foundation initiative that means the most to them and support with $10,000 or more. $10,000 makes a noticeable difference to the Breast Cancer Journey Assistance Fund (20-50 patients), Externship Program (3-4 medical students), and Research Grant funds (1-2 studies).

- President’s Circle Donors help to ensure the long-term health of The Foundation with donations of $50,000 or more or legacy gifts of $100,000 or more. At the highest level of support, these donors can choose to support initiatives that mean the most to them as well.

Having been the recipient of the largest grant ever awarded by The Aesthetic Foundation, I can personally attest to the power of aesthetic research made possible by Foundation member dues and generous donations.
